Harmful Algal Bloom Monitoring and Modeling with Real-Time Technology

In 2022, Otsego Lake in New York became one of many lakes to experience its first cyanobacterial bloom. While the cause is still unknown, the blooms may be an indicator of various water quality issues resulting from invasive species, runoff events or other environmental stressors. To get to the bottom of the mystery, Kiyoko Yokota, an associate professor of biology with the State University of New York (SUNY) at Oneonta, has spent the past several years researching the lake and supporting local management strategies and organizations.Yokota serves as the president of the North American Lake Management Society, scientific advisor for the Otsego Lake Watershed Supervisory Committee and technical advisor for the Otsego Lake Association, all of which support conservation efforts on the lakes.Currently, Yokota is working with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to develop the Nine Element Plan, a comprehensive lake and watershed management plan. The goal of the plan is to create a long-term strategy to protect both Otsego Lake and the surrounding watershed. This strategy will be periodically evaluated for its efficacy and revised as needed. The evaluation uses watershed and lake models to be built with both manually collected snapshot data and high-frequency sensor data. Challenge: Gathering High-Frequency Data Remotely

Suttle Lake Data Buoy

For some time, sockeye salmon weren’t able to reach Oregon’s Suttle Lake due to barriers along the Deschutes and Metolius Rivers that kept them out. But thanks to recent remediation efforts, the lake has recently been seeing more sockeye migrating from the Pacific Ocean to spawn.That would be no problem if the lake had a healthy food web, but there is evidence that salmon native to Suttle Lake, kokanee salmon, have been shrinking in recent years. Many blame their loss in biomass on dwindling food supplies and there is concern amongst aquatic experts that more migrating sockeye salmon could have increasing impacts on Suttle Lake’s food web in the future. Challenge: Understanding the food web at Suttle Lake Experts at the High Lakes Aquatic Alliance Foundation are at the fore of addressing those concerns, thanks to a new lake data buoy platform they’ve deployed. Project managers at the foundation worked with NexSens Technology to design the lake data buoy, incorporating sensors and cellular telemetry for capturing high-resolution measurements on the lake’s dynamics. Presque Isle State Park gets more visitors annually than most national parks, and many of those visitors come for the area’s beaches and fishing. Before they get to the sandy, lagoon-spotted area, many check conditions online thanks to a buoy launched by the Regional Science Consortium.Locals from Erie, Pennsylvania who frequent Lake Erie’s waters off Presque Isle use the buoy’s data as well, which reveal changes to wave height and frequency in real time. In addition, visitors to the buoy’s website can view recent 10-second video clips and track weather conditions on the lake.Charter captains use the buoy’s measurements to plan for additional fuel costs when the waters are rough, and recreational boaters rely on its data to spare them the hassle of trailering up to the lake only to find unsafe conditions. Data from the buoy are also contributed to the National Data Buoy Center, which assists the National Weather Service in forecasting
