Seventy tons of toxic carbon tetrachloride made its way down the Kanawha and Ohio Rivers in February of 1977. The spill raised tremendous concern over how well the bevy of recently instated environmental laws were actually being enforced. Citizens had no way of knowing for sure whether such harmful compounds would be entering their drinking water.Residents of the affected area for the most part only learned of the hazardous spill after the worst of it had already passed downstream. It appeared as if one of the four operations authorized to make carbon tet discharges on the two rivers had illegally exceeded its NPDES permit, and an Environmental Protection Agency investigation discovered the responsible company had a history of 20 previous spills of the harmful and carcinogenic compound. Widespread confusion in the Cincinnati area during the spill left many citizens worried; some were told they had to boil their water to keep it clean, while others were warned the compounds would generate noxious fumes.The catastrophe made it apparent that a system needed to be in place to detect such dangerous organic compounds early on and alert necessary officials before it was too late to respond.

Kazakhstan is a country not often associated with having a shoreline, let alone a marine environment. However, in the western corner of Kazakhstan lies a section of coastline along the Caspian Sea. Through a network of rivers and channels, the Caspian Sea is actually connected to the trade routes of the world’s oceans.To support the expanding oil fields of Western Kazakhstan, a deep-water port is being constructed in the Northern Caspian Sea. The project has many challenges, including bringing ocean-going vessels into the shallow waters of the Northern Caspian. Averaging 2 meters water depth throughout much of the region, a large-scale dredging project has begun to dig a shipping channel over 60 kilometers long. In order to minimize the environmental impacts of the dredging activities, oceanographic and meteorological data is needed not only to monitor the daily conditions, but also to support the long-term modeling of the disposal material.Since 2013, Gravity Consulting has been working with a team of scientists to support the monitoring, tracking and modeling of the ongoing marine construction as well as the ultimate fate of disposed dredge material.

The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi (NHBP) is facing the future with a firm grasp on tradition and a mastery of new technology to handle rapid growth and changes. Recognized as a tribe by the US federal government in 1995, the NHBP employs thousands in western and central Michigan.Since its inception, restoring its land which now spans over 1,000 acres and fostering environmental stewardship for the good of the tribe's future and preservation of its past, has been priorities. The tribe expresses these priorities through the work conducted by its Environmental Department. Challenge: A way of life under threat Tradition connects the tribe and the land of the Pine Creek Reservation—located only about 15 miles south of Battle Creek, Michigan. With the seasons come tribal happenings such as maple sugaring, the first sign of spring, and the wild ricing, which occurs at the end of summer.
