Early Warning River Monitoring Network St. Clair River

Project Overview

The Detroit and St. Clair Rivers have been under increased scrutiny, as many spills have been reported over the years. The St. Clair River is listed as an Area of Concern (AOC) as a result of municipal and industrial discharges, CSOs, and other contaminated sediments entering the River.

A U.S. funded river monitoring project has been established at thirteen water treatment intakes along the Detroit and St. Clair Rivers to immediately recognize river contaminants and identify the origin, so that future occurrences can be prevented.

NexSens Technology was selected to provide data logging equipment, software, and real-time web datacenter service to collect water quality data and provide a web-based interface for project management.

System Description

At the thirteen water treatment facilities along the stretch of river, NexSens 5100-iSIC data loggers with Ethernet telemetry simultaneously collect data from several water quality sensing instruments including YSI 6600 V2-4 multi-parameter water quality sondes, Turner Fluorometers, Inficon Hapsite gas chromatograph/mass spectrometers (GC/MS), and Hach total organic carbon (TOC) analyzers.

NexSens iChart software serves as the centralized project database for data received from these instruments, and each parameter has a set high/low alarm to alert officials of a possible contamination. iChart software provides an easy-to-use interface for triggering alarms and notifications via email and/or text messaging based on set parameter limits.

The project equipment evaluation and selection committee also selected NexSens' WQData web datacenter service to provide a real-time interface for viewing river water data at each treatment facility and other project offices. The internet based, password-protected datacenter allows officials to view data in tables, statistical summaries, and graphs. An integral project Forum facilitates communication and information.

The real-time data will allow water utility, Local County and State of Michigan personnel to monitor the river water quality and to be notified of spills or contaminants that may enter the 93 mile stretch of river.

NexSens SITE-INT

Annual site interrogation for up to 6 sites. NexSens iChart server interrogating remote sites and making the data available at WQData.com. Service includes system status alerts and alarms.
